Virtual DJ Remote Connection Setup over IP
This article explains how to set up a connection between Virtual DJ and SoundSwitch running on separate computers.
In this example, Virtual DJ is running on a "DJ's Computer" and SoundSwitch is running on a "Lighting Computer."
To get started, you will need to ensure the following is installed on your computer.
Virtual DJ 2020 or newer
SoundSwitch 2.2 or newer
Bonjour (windows only)
Please also ensure that your network security such as firewalls are set to allow both Virtual DJ and SoundSwitch access to networks and are not blocked by the firewall or third-party anti-virus software.
Both Autoloops and Scripted Tracks are supported in this configuration.
The idea is to allow a separate lighting operator to control the lights while all lighting FX, Autoloops, and Scripted Tracks remain in sync while the DJ focuses on their performance.
There are 3 main steps to set up the connection. This document assumes you have already set up your lighting hardware. If not, you can learn more here.
Setting up a remote connection between Virtual DJ and SoundSwitch
Step 1: Scripting Audio Files
Scripting Audio files is not a required step if you only want to use Autoloops, however, if you want customized light show for each song, then you must follow Step 1.
If you only want to use the Autooloop feature, skip to Step 2
When a light show is created for an audio file, a unique ID number is added to a tag in the Audio Files Metadata used to link a light show to a song. Virtual DJ sends this ID number to SoundSwitch which loads and syncs the appropriate light show.
There are two workflows for Auto Scripting the DJs audio files
Script Light Shows on the Lighting Computer
The best workflow is to have the DJ provide their audio files on a USB drive. In SoundSwitch, Autoscript these audio files and give the files back to the DJ making sure they "replace" the original audio files with the newly scripted audio files. This step is important as "replacing" the audio files ensures the unique ID number is copied to the DJ's tracks.
Script Light Shows on the DJ's computer
In this example, SoundSwitch needs to be installed on the DJs computer. You will also need to provide them with your SoundSwitch project file.
This is located under the following directory:
users/username/music/SoundSwitch.
Install SoundSwitch on the DJs Computer and copy your SoundSwitch folder to this location on the DJ's computer.
Now, the DJ can simply AutoScript their audio files and playlists and when AutoScirpting is finished, can provide their SoundSwitch Project file including the new lighting files.
Step 2: Setting up the connection
On the DJ's Computer, start Virtual DJ connect to a network and locate the IP address of this computer.
On the Lighting Computer start Soundswitch, connected to the same network as the Dj's computer and open the Preferences in SoundSwitch and select the following option:
Virtual DJ - On another Computer with IP.
Enter the IP Address of the DJ's computer.
Step 3: Testing
Restart SoundSwitch and select Performance Mode, then, select the Venue you will be using.
On the DJ's computer, load tracks into Virtual DJ, Press play, and check the correct light show is playing back.
Once completing the above steps and you are still not able to establish a connection between SoundSwitch and VDJ please check you have os2l enabled in your VDJ preferences.
