With the Maschine 3.4 desktop and Maschine+ 2.1.0.4 update, you can now use a selection of acclaimed Native Instruments Play Series instruments and effects natively on your Maschine+ in standalone mode.
This guide explains the requirements to get started, how to install the products, and how to manage performance for a smooth workflow.
Prerequisites: What You Need
Before you can use these new instruments and effects, there are two important requirements.
Product Ownership
This is a compatibility release. It does not include the products for free.
- You must already own the compatible Play Series instruments or effects in your Native Instruments account.
- Products you own will automatically become available for installation on your Maschine+.
- Note: Native 360 subscriptions are not supported for this feature.
High-Speed SD Card (Required)
The Play Series instruments are built on Kontakt, which uses Direct-from-Disk (DFD) streaming. This means the audio is streamed directly from the SD card in real-time.
To optimise the loading time and avoid audio dropouts, glitches, or performance issues, a high-speed SD card is required. The SD card included with your Maschine+ will not be fast enough.
Recommended SD Card Specs:
- UHS-I, U3, Native I, Class 10, V30, A1
UHS-II or UHS-III cards will also work, but they will not provide any additional performance benefit.
How to Install Products
Once your prerequisites are met, you can install your products directly on your Maschine+ device:
- On your Maschine+, navigate to SETTINGS.
- Go to the Library tab.
- Select the Available tab.
- Any compatible Play Series instruments or effects that you own will appear in this list.
- Select the products you wish to install and follow the on-screen prompts.
Managing CPU Performance
This update brings the full desktop versions of these instruments to your standalone device. This gives you unlimited sound-shaping capabilities, but it also means you must be mindful of the device's CPU.
Here are the two most important considerations for managing performance.
1. Use Bounce in Place
The best way to manage CPU is to use the Bounce in Place feature. This is especially useful after you have a pattern you are happy with.
Bouncing your pattern to audio will:
- Commit the instrument's sound to an audio track.
- Remove the instance of the Play Series instrument.
- Free up valuable CPU resources, allowing you to load more instruments and effects.
2. Preset Performance
Because these are the full, unlimited desktop instruments, you may find that a few presets per instrument will push the CPU to its limits with just one instance.
- If you load a preset that causes performance issues (like audio crackling or dropouts), this is expected.
- Simply ignore these few presets and try another one. The vast majority of sounds are fully usable and will bring a new palette of sounds to your standalone setup.
