In this article, you will learn how to configure Akai Pro MIDI devices to control the parameters of your favourite Logic Pro instruments.
Logic Pro supports automatic assignment of hardware controls for a variety of USB MIDI controllers. When a supported USB MIDI controller is connected, the knobs, sliders, and other hardware controls on the controller are automatically assigned to Smart Controls and other functions in Logic Pro.
If your controllers encoders and faders are not automatically assigned to the Smart Controls, you can easily assign them by using the MIDI Learn feature inside of Logic Pro. To do so, please follow the steps below...
1. Click on the dial icon in the top-left section of your screen to open Smart Controls.
2. Click on the parameter you want to control in the bottom section the screen so that it turns blue around the edges.
3. Press the Learn button next to External Assignment.
4. Move your chosen hardware control so that it is recognised by Logic and auto-mapped.
5. Press the Learn button again to finalise the assignment.
In some instances, the Controller Assignment section of the Control Surface settings may show that your Akai Pro device does not have a control script specified and has been set to MIDI Input 2.
This will require you to go to the Audio MIDI Setup section for your Mac and change the input to MIDI Input 1.
To do so, search Audio MIDI Setup using the spotlight on your Mac and open the matching result. If the Audio Setup screen accidently loads first, select Window > MIDI Setup.
Double click on your controller to open the properties menu, which will give you the option to change the MIDI Port, as seen in the image below...
