VX5 AutoTune - Proper Gain Staging to Reduce Noise

Sometimes, when you are using your device, you may hear a hiss or noise. The hiss that you're hearing is noise floor. Confirmation of this can be found in the fact you can adjust the volume and the hiss doesn't change, and you have the gain all the way down. Noise floor is normal for any audio device.

If you are hearing noise, please make adjustments to your current gain staging setup. In many cases, this is due to the fact that there is not enough input signal (gain) and the signal from the microphone is not being boosted properly; it is closer in level to the noise floor

If the input signal is not loud enough, then it may lead to overcompensating with the volume level on the VX5 and also likely the input level on the speaker, which pulls up the signal of the microphone, but also the signal of the noise floor.

An important thing to note is that a direct connection between your microphone and the speaker will require more gain than the output of the VX5.

This means that if you're trying to connect the VX5 in place of the microphone without changing any settings in your signal chain, it will make the VX5 seem 'too loud' which may lead you to turn the VX5 down at the input gain.

Proper Gain Staging:

You'll need to first make sure that there is appropriate gain on the input of the VX5:

1. Speak/sing into the microphone and increase the gain until the signal light blinks red.  Make sure to speak/sing at a level comparable to the way you will be using the VX5.

2. Decrease the gain until the signal light only blinks green; not red.

3. Adjust the Volume (i.e. output volume of the VX5) and input/output volume on all other devices in the signal to balance the level.

From here, please ensure you follow gain staging procedures on your other pedals.

Gain staging can be a tricky process and depends heavily on any other devices in your signal chain.
