Akai Pro MPC Series | Understanding the MPC's Internal Drive

This guide will provide an overview on the MPC's internal drive, explaining how to access and manage it.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Mounting the Internal Drive in Controller Mode

The internal drive on Gen 1 MPC's do not mount to a computer in controller mode. Gen 1 MPC's include the MPC Live, Live II, One, One+, X, X SE, Key 61 and Key 37.

The only MPC that currently allows this is the MPC Live III. Please refer to this article to learn more: MPC Live III | Internal Drives : Akai Professional

Managing the Internal Drive Contents

The Browser lets you navigate your MPC’s internal drive and your user external drives to load samples, sequences, songs, etc. To view the internal drive, navigate to Browser > Places > Internal.

Once you have accessed this section, you will see various folders within it that play crucial roles in the overall functionality of the system.

These folders contain core and functional files that are required for the MPC to operate effectively. It is important to note that the majority of the folders you see here are specifically designed to reside on the internal drive and should not be deleted.

Please exercise caution and ensure that these critical files remain intact to maintain optimal performance.

In the case you wish to free up space on the internal drive, please see the folders/files you can delete and move over to your own external user drive - such as an SD Card, USB drive or SSD.

Splice and Synths Folders

If you have a Splice and/or Synths folders on the internal drive, these two folders will naturally hold a lot of files and take up a significant amount of space if they are located on the internal drive.

  • The Synths folder will contain files associated with the various plugins you've downloaded to your MPC
  • The Splice folder will contain various .wav files synced from a connected Splice account

You can delete both of these folders and re-download them to your own user drive

User Projects and User Files

User saved projects and samples can also take up a considerable amount of space on the internal drive. On default, MPC projects (and their ProjectData folders) are saved in Browser > Places > Internal > MPC Documents > Projects.

Note: If you have a Gen 1 MPC, the Internal drive cannot be accessed on a computer - we recommend saving all your work to an external user drive.

If you have any user projects on the internal drive, you can save and move them to another drive using the below steps:

1. Open the MPC Project in Browser
2. Go to Menu > Save > Project As
3. Then re-save the project to your external user drive

Tip: To show all file types in the Browser menu, Tap the three-pages icon:

Tap the gear icon (top-right side of the screen) and make sure that Hide project data folders is unchecked

Once your MPC projects (and their ProjectData folders) have been re-saved to your external user drive, you can then delete them by pressing Shift + tap Delete.
